Is it normal to gain weight in the first trimester?

LS00

This is my 2nd pregnancy and im almost 15 weeks pregnant. I've already gained 4 pounds! Is this normal? With my first pregnancy i gained 60 pounds! i just dont remember how early I started gaining it. Im trying to eat better this pregnancy. Ive been laying off the fast food and eating more fruit. How much did everyone gain when they were this far along?

Answer
I think in my first trimester i gained about 5-6lbs i didnt have any morning sickness and didnt throw up at all unlike some of the women that lose weight. But since then i have slowly gained weight and have gained 20lbs altogether. Honestly i dont really eat right haha but i do drink my water and walk as much as possible. So sounds like your off to a good start to me.

it also says to
Have sex in the afternoon, rather than at night.

Have sex during the full moon.
Use the Chinese Gender Chart to help you decide when to conceive.

Just curious, did anyone have pregnancy symptoms/cravings similar to birth control side effects?

**amandaly

From what I've read, birth control tricks the body into thinking iit's pregnant so it won't ovulate. So I was wondering if the symptoms/cravings I get will be the same when I get pregnant (later in life)? Anyone noticed any pregnancy symptoms/ food craving that you had on BCP?

Answer
No you will not get any of these cravings from birth control, except for when you pms which would happen even if you weren't on birth control. If you are getting these symptoms and have been having unprotected sex get a home pregnancy test. You very well could be pregnant, birth control is not 100% effective.

What is a recipe for a pregnancy safe homemade bathroom cleaner?

recipes for pregnancy on ... pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition
recipes for pregnancy image

Popple

I need a good soap scum removing and most importantly disinfectant bathroom cleaner. Everything I am finding says to add lavender oil to disinfect. However, I also read to be careful of essential oils while pregnant.

Any recipes?

Answer
If you have concerns about using essential oils during pregnancy, can I sugest you read the article "Aromatherapy in Pregnancy" which you can find here http://aromatherapyandnaturalskincare.com.au/index.php?essential_oils=169&Aromatherapy in Pregnancy

If after reading the article and you are happy to continue down your natural cleaning route?

Cleaning and maintaining your home using natural ingredients including essential oils rather than using toxic chemicals is a cheaper, more environmentally friendly way and it smells SO much better!

My top 5 Essential Oils for use around the home are -

Tea tree - for its antibacterial properties which have been renowned for decades

Eucalyptus - fresh and invigorating and a boon if there are coughs and colds in the house

Lavender - relaxing but still with antibacterial properties - a most versatile oil

Lemon - the ultimate in freshness - loved by everyone

Pine - clean & fresh - especially good in the bathroom

Here are a few ideas on how to use these fragrant powerhouses around the home -

When washing hard floors use a non-scented detergent in the water and add 3 drops of tea tree and 4 drops of lemon essential oils. Or use a cup of white vinegar in hot water with the essential oils added.

Make up a spray bottle with 10 drops of lemon essential oil in 100ml water. Shake well and use as a spray and wipe product to clean kitchen benches.

Put a couple of drops of lavender or pine essential oils on the cardboard tube inside toilet rolls to subtly freshen the air.

The germs which cause colds are usually transferred by the surfaces we touch so try adding 1 or 2 drops of eucalyptus onto a damp cloth and use this to wipe over door knobs, light switches and other similar surfaces around the home.

Any of these essential oils work well to remove cooking odours in the kitchen. Simply add 6 drops of one or a total of 6 drops of a combination of oils to water in a candle vaporiser, or with or without water in an electric vaporiser (refer to the manufacturers instructions)

**A note of caution always take care using essential oils on plastic or painted wooden surfaces around the home as the oils can cause damage or discolouration especially if left on for any length of time. If in any doubt test your mix in an unobtrusive place first.

What foods/recipes are good for pregnant woman?

jenny

This is my 2nd pregnancy. Last time around I had a rough time at the end of the pregnancy. So I am trying to eat healthier. I am so used to eating mcdonalds though( I work there, so its free) that I can't really remember how to cook and prepare meals. I don't want this kid to be unhealthy so I would like him to get as much healthy food as I can get.
I don't care much for onions & mushrooms.
Anything is appreciated(:

Answer
There is no special diet and recipes for a pregnancy. You should eat a healthy diet that gives all the nutrients to help your baby develop and grow.

Remember that the food you eat is the main source of energy for your baby growing inside. A pregnant women should know that she is not only responsible for herself, but also for the unborn child inside her. The child's physical and mental development after birth will have a influence of anything seen, thoughts and the food eaten by the pregnant woman.

1.There is no special diet for a pregnant women, but eating a healthy balanced diet that gives all the nutrients for your baby to develop and grow is recommended.

2.For the first 3 months, the diet of a pregnant woman should include food rich in iron, folic acid and foods high in calcium. You may take iron and folic acid tablets if you are pregnant or lactating.

3.Folic Acid & Birth Defects
Women should get enough folic acid from their diet before and during the pregnancy to prevent major birth defects involving baby's brain or spine, according to Canadian researcher Louise Pilote of McGill University, Montreal as reported in the British Medical Journal, May 2009.
A cup of Brussels sprouts supplies 93.6 mg of folic acid. Brussels sprouts recipe

4.Fortifying flour products with folic acid may cut the number of babies born with congenital heart disease, the most common of all birth defects.

5.In the next 3 month (i.e.3 to 6 month pregnancy), the woman needs extra protein and calcium. Look for foods with high protein.

6.Pregnancy & Weight Gain
Most women gain between 10-15 kgs, but too much weight gain should be avoided. However, the weight gain during pregnancy will vary according to your pre-pregnancy weight. According to the experts, an overweight woman is advised to gain only 7 kg (15 pounds) and an underweight woman to gain up to 18 kg (40 pounds).
7.Do Not Eat For Two
Many pregnant women wrongly think that they should eat for two. Note that you need only 200-300 extra calories daily in pregnancy, i.e. a cup of reduced fat milk or yogurt and a medium orange. This is because your body actually absorbs more nutrients from food you eat during pregnancy.
Researcher Alison Stuebeworking at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston found that pregnant women should avoid eating for two since too much weight gain is linked with complications at birth. Pregnant women who eat fried foods and dairy products and food for two are more likely to gain as much as 35 pounds. Women with vegetarian diets and eating more monounsaturated fat found in olive oil and nuts in early pregnancy are half as likely to gain an unhealthy amount of weight.

If you MUST eat at McDonald's, make healthier choices. Salads, fruits, and sandwich wraps, as opposed to a big Mac and fries is in your best interest.

Why do women choose to gain so much weight during their pregnancy?

and then not lose it and complain about how fat they are? how come women think they can use pregnancy as an ewxcuse to do nothing and have as much food as they want and not exercise? why do women gain 50+ pounds during a pregnancy? all y0u really need to gain is 10. geez.

Answer
Frank, I question your motives to ask these questions. How many women are you disgusted by that have gained too much weight (in your opinion), not exercised and use it as an "excuse"? Who informed you that gaining only 10 pounds was healthy for the Momma or the baby? Stop obsessing and go for a run, it's healthier.

What do you get from WIC during pregnancy?

Q. I'm going to apply for WIC tomorrow but I am curious as to what exactly they provide during pregnancy. Thank you.
Excuse me but I am a full time student who also works. So please spare me all your "hard working tax payer" bullshit. Thanks.

Answer
In Florida (I assume its the same or close in all states) you would receive for pregnancy with one child:

5.5 gal milk and no cheese or 4.75 gal milk and 1 lb cheese (split up 2 gallons on 2 checks and 1.5 on the last check)
1 dozen eggs
144 oz juice (I get it on 2 different checks 96 oz and 48 oz)
36 oz cereal on one check
1 lb dry beans (or you can choose 4 cans of beans) and 18 oz peanut butter OR 2 lb dry beans (or 8 cans of beans) or 36 oz peanut butter on one check
$10.00 Fruits & Vegetables voucher (on its own check)
1 lb whole grains (here its select whole wheat breads, brown rice or corn tortillas)

If you are having more that one baby the multiply these amounts by 1.5 so you would get 50% more for each baby.
These amounts change when the baby is born. You will only receive it for 6 months after the baby is born if you choose the formula feed. Also you will only receive it for as long as you breastfeed up to one year. And after you baby is 6 months old they now give you jarred stage 2 baby foods and cereal.
If you formula feed your baby gets after 6 months:
128 oz baby fruits and vegetables(about 32 4 oz jars or about one a day ), formula and baby cereal
If you breastfeed your baby gets after 6 months:
256 oz baby fruits and vegetables (about 64 4 oz jars or about two a day ), 77.5 oz baby meat jars (31 jars or one a day) and baby cereal

I just found out that I'm preggers! My fiancee and i are quite excited.
I was curious as to what foods you should eat during pregnancy as well as what vitamins i should take?

I want to do anything and everything that will keep my baby healthy and safe.

Any tips as well as answers to my question are welcome!
Wish me luck!
P.S.
I'm due December 6th. I was a December baby so I'm excited to be having one too!

Answer
congratulations! THAT'S SO EXCITING!!!!

OK, so the first thing you need is a vitamin. You need Folic Acid today ... not tomorrow ... today .... because the vital time for spinal development is day 17-31 which is probably this week! If you don't have any vitamins at home, just have a bowl of breakfast cereal which contain 400mcg. You need 600mcg a day, or maybe 800, but you'll also get it from green veggies like broccoli or cooked spinach.

My doctor have me a fabulous prenatal vitamin prescription which has a stool softener when when your bowels start getting smooshed by the baby and makes you constipated. It also has DHA which you need for your baby's brain, but I found that the DHA also stopped me from having crazy fish-in-a-can food cravings LOL. My vitamin is called Prenate DHA and a year's supply was $60 (prescription). If you can't see your doctor for a few weeks, just take a normal multi-vitamin. That's fine too!

You probably already know what's healthy and what isn't; if you're tempted to cook 'bad' food, just splash out on a healthy take-out, like Chinese veggies with plain rice, Mexican (beans yay!) or a veggie pasta sauce. Keep off the heavy fatty foods because they can make morning sickness worse; I found that those little plastic bowls of fruit (designed for kids lunchboxes, I think!) are great for a snack when you get a sudden craving of feel dizzy which happens from low blood sugar in the first trimester. Finally, keep well hydrated -- I drink Vitamin Water because it's full of electrolytes and that helps your cells keep in more water than you can pee out (which, BTW, will be every 2 hours!!!)

Once again, many congrats and enjoy your 9 months!

How much did you gain during your pregnancy and how fast did you lose the weight?

Anne

I gained 45 pounds during my pregnancy and have lost 25 of it and she will be two weeks old Monday. Is this a healthy amount? I really have not had much of an appetite since she was born and I'm not sure why.

Answer
I gained 25 pounds with my son. It came off really quick within the first month. Im sure your not too hungry because your so busy with your baby, just as i was. If your breast feeding it helps also. Just remember to eat foods that will keep your energy up and won't give your baby tummy troubles.

Some moms told me that baby food like Gerber is healthier than homemade one because it doesn't contain nitrates - I would like to know your opinion - thanks!
only carrots?

Answer
The only thing that I have read was not to make homemade carrots until baby was 9 months due to the high amount of nitrates in them. I read that baby food carrots were grew in soil that was *regulated* for nitrates.

Homemade is better in my opinion.

Any good and healthy baby food recipes?

Michael K

We were thinking about trying homemade baby food when our baby is about 5 months old. Has anyone ever tried this? Does anyone have any good recipes for baby food that would be healthy for this age? I heard something about making them in ice cube treys, then keeping them in baggies, if you do this, how do you thaw it before feeding baby?

Answer
I never bought baby food for any of mine and used a thing called a baby food grinder that worked wonderful
As with using commercial baby food, you never ever introduce more than one thing at a time and always simple.
You do not need recipes for steamed carrots or cooked peas. Those are both excellent beginning veggies and you only need a mouth full or so at first feeding.
As for cereal, we used cream of rice, cooked per directions on the box and served it with a bit of breast milk or formula mixed into it. I added sugar(just a touch) but that was 30 years ago and adding sugar was not frowned upon as much then as it is now.
Mashed raw banana is also an excellent beginning fruit.
I also used canned fruit(canned in fruit juice) and ground them in the grinder for my babies. they all loved them.
Once your baby is eating a variety of foods, he can eat what ever you are having with the exception of things like chili, pizza, and other super spicy or rich foods.
For example, I would grind roast beef and feed the baby that and mashed potato with a small amount of the gravy and ground or mashed veg that we were having on the night we had roast beef. Same with meatloaf or chicken dinners.
Homemade chicken or beef noodle soups are great too. I would grind the ingredients, using broth to make it the right consistency and the babies loved that too.
Children ate healthy long before baby food was invented and starting with special recipes is just silly.
You will end up cooking a different meal for each kid and who has that kind of time??

a typical first meal for a 5-6 month old is a couple of spoonfulls of c.r of rice cereal and then his formula.
If all goes well, you can introduce a spoon full or so of mashed peaches after the cream of rice is eaten and then the formula.
I only fed one meal of solids at first to get babies tummy accustomed to the different textures and flavors and gradually introduced mashed peas for lunch, followed by a bit of fruit or carrots and fruit.
Eventually the meat and potatoes were added to the lineup and I would save some of what ever we had for supper to serve the next day for babies lunch.
I added new foods very slowly as we have allergy issues in our family and it just seemed to work best that way.

In need of weight loss help....feel like cutting fat from me arghhhh?

sparkle_ca

i don't need anyone to tell me how to diet, because i know how..i have a problem with doing it since i had my son.
Before i was pregnant i had slimmed down a lot, i didn't gain much weight during pregnancy and it seemed to drop off straight after but then it all came back on. I used to gain weight on my legs but now it goes on my tummy...It seems that everything i eat goes on my stomach.
I do exercise and eat healthily but then i seem to get to a stage where i binge for a week...it's really bad. Some days i'll eat 4 chocolate bars on top of a take away. I'll do that for say a week and then the week after i'll feel so bad that i only have coffee and one digestive biscuit for a week. I know in my head that it isn't right but i can't stop myself. I HATE how i look. I won't even take my son swimming, he's only been once and he's 8 months old now.
I've done weight watchers before and did well but i'm a mum and a student now so my time is very limited. But when i try to do it at home i don't stick to my points.
I've got to the point where i've fantasised about cutting fat away from my stomach. I am a size 14(uk) but i feel huge and when i look in the mirror i see a 20 stone woman looking back at me. My breasts are a H cup and i want to cut them off too. I'm only 20 but i feel like an old frump.
i don't want your pity but i would like some tips on keeping motivated and some quick/easy healthy recipes as having an 8 month old and a house to keep (i live alone) and 4 assignments i find i go for the quicker food which is usually the worst for me...
Please help me :(

Answer
I'm seeing a lot of excuses for why you can't do this. The first thing you need to do is change your mentality - NO EXCUSES! Planning to fail guarantees failure.

The only way to lose weight, get fit and stay that way is the slow way â healthy diet and regular exercise.

No dieting: dieting ends, a healthy diet is a lifetime of good habits. A basic healthy diet: lean meats, dark veggies, whole grains, lots of water; reduce processed carbs (soda pop is Satan!) and increase fiber. Snack on fruits and veggies instead of salt and sweets. WW plan encourages this sort of eating - use what you learned from Florine! Allow yourself a splurge once every two or three weeks â itâs easier to be good if you know thereâs a treat in your future. Educate yourself â there are thousands of websites with nutrition information. You can tell the good ones â they arenât selling a quick fix. Everybody has different needs - find what works for you and stick with it.

Exercise: start easy and work your way up. Make the time 3-4 days a week â an hour walk with the stroller, a stroll on the treadmill, whatever. NO EXCUSES - it has to become a habit. After a few months start challenging yourself â add leg weights, join a gym, take dance classes, something. Add exercise to your day in small ways: take the stairs instead of the elevator, do isometrics at your desk, ride your bike to school instead of the bus. There are exercises you can do that involve your baby - healthy for you, and your baby will learn to be active, too.

Sadly, exercise doesnât burn enough calories to lose much weight â two miles on the treadmill equals about half of a Big Mac. But exercise is irreplaceable for a healthy heart, stamina and flexibility. That means a longer and more active lifespan. Again, education is the key â anatomy and physiology is the ownerâs manual for your body. Avoid websites that are selling the Patented Nuclear Abdominatorizer of the Week â they are more interested in your wallet than your health.

Donât quit just because you fall off the wagon one or twelve times â thatâs just an excuse for laziness. It took years to develop your bad habits; it will take time to change them. You will make mistakes - forgive yourself and get back to work.

Remember â your biggest obstacles are laziness and unrealistic expectations. Your best tools are perseverance and education.

Good Luck!
