How much baby food should he eat at 17lbs? He's always hungry almost on just formula?

Answer
It has been a long time since I fed a baby, but as I recall, the baby ate at mealtime with the rest of the family and had a bottle between meals. The best advise must come from your child's doctor. Sounds like you have a healthy boy, so enjoy him while he is little.

What is the best dog food to feed my baby male Yorkie?

just the o

I am going to pick up my Yorkie for the first time on Friday. I can't wait to get him home, but I am also concerned on what type of food to give him. I want my puppy to be healthy and happy but I want hime to also find his food tasty..and not nasty like most healthy dog foods. The breeder I bought him from has been feeding him Beniful. But he dosen't particularly like it. Any suggestions on a healthy tasty dog food for puppys?
What does your puppy eat and enjoy?

P.S. I also want to give him treats, I figured I would give him fruitloops as a special treat since yorkies are prone to low-blood sugar....is this a good idea? or should i find something else for him?

Any other information on how to keep my puppy healthy and happy is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Oh yeah I am 15 and getting him for my birthday!

Answer
A median priced food that was not on the recall lists with the melamine etc. is Nature's Recipe which does not have corn, wheat, soy or artificial dyes. Also doesn't have BHA or BHT and is readily available in large Pet Stores like PetSmart or PetCo. Most other brands sold there have been in multiple recalls for both dry and wet.
Beneful wasn't recalled, but it has lots of junk in it, allergy causing product. Avoid foods that list wheat, corn or soy in their ingredients.
When you change food, do it gradually over a week and a half or so. Start feeding the old food (3/4) with 1/4 new food for a few days and if tolerated well, then give 1/2 old and 1/2 new- same progression then 3/4 new and 1/4 old then all new. You can add a few teaspoons of pumpkin pie filling to the food while changing over as it tends to settle a dogs stomach and prevent a reaction like diarrhea which happens sometimes when changing food.
Royal Canin makes food for the breed and another food called "Baby Dog" but it had been heavily involved in recalls. Unfortunately, many many brands were manufactured at the same plant where common ingredients used in different brands contaminated food.
http://www.itchmo.com
I'd stay away from Natural Balance because they were also heavily involved in recalls and recently again had recalled canned foods, this time for botulism. See itchmo.com for details.
Fruit Loops aren't good for people or for dogs, but a few won't kill him. There are many good treats that are healthy, or at least designed for dogs, to use instead.
There is a doggie Ice Cream called "Frosty Paws" which many large grocery stores carry like Randall's, Kroger's, Super Target, etc. Call ahead to one in your area and ask if they have this in stock. It's usually in the ice-cream section but is actually made for dogs. Comes in four cups to a box and dogs just LOVE this!
Also there are freeze dried liver treats you can get from Pet Stores, and Yogurt Drops for dogs that are made in Germany.
Avoid rawhides because dogs sometimes swallow big pieces they loosen and then get sick and some have formaldehyde in them and the white ones are sometimes soaked in bleach during their processing. BLECCH.
But Nylabones (inedible kind) and Kongs make fun toys to exercise teeth and gums on.

Answer
Nowadays living a healthy lifestyle is kind of a difficult. Most foods that we eat consist of preservatives that sometimes contribute to a higher risk in getting diseases.

Who doesnât love to eat? Nobody! Itâs certainly a fact that we all love to eat. There is no problem in eating as long as you know your limitations and as long as you have enough knowledge on the contents of the food you eat.

If you will notice most foods that are sold contains preservatives that maybe dangerous to your health. Other preservatives can give you higher risk in getting heart diseases and certain cancers. And if that happens it requires medication.

Do you believe that herbal remedies are now used as an alternative for drug medications?

The benefits that we get from herbs have been known for many centuries. These herbs are known for curing every known illness. Nowadays, 80% of the worldâs population uses herbs as a primary form of medication.

There are many people that believe that herbs are just as effective as drugs. And good thing about herbs is that they donât have any side effects. But still, despite of the benefits that we get from herbs, criticisms from other health experts are still there. Health experts state that herbal medicinal plants have not been tested for efficacy so it should not be use as an alternative for drug medicines.

However, here are some of the herbs that are popularly known to bring benefits to us.

Aloe Vera â They are used for healing burns and wounds. They help in the stimulation of the cells regeneration. Aloe Vera can soothe stomach irritation and use as an aid in healing.

Corn Silk - Helpful for the bladder, kidneys and small intestine. It can be use together with other herbs to remove mucus from the urine. Useful for bed-wetting, carpet tunnel syndrome, obesity, premenstrual syndrome and prostate disorder.

Green Tea â It helps reduce the risk of esophageal stomach, skin and colon cancer. It delays the onset of arteriosclerosis and helps offsets mental fatigue. Sometimes use

During pregnancy or while nursing.

Garlic - It helps in detoxification, protection of the body against infection and helps in the enhancement of the immune system. It improves blood circulation, lowers blood pressure and blood lipid levels. It is recommended for the cure of arthritis, asthma, cancer, digestive problem, colds, flu, insomnia, ulcers, heart disorders and yeast infections.

Lemon Grass â It is good for the nails and skin.

Eucalyptus - Good for colds, coughs and other respiratory problems and reduce swelling by increasing blood flow. It helps tired and sore muscles to be more relaxed. Eucalyptus is for external use only.

Well, these are just some of the herbal plants we have together with their benefits. However, you should be aware that not all plants are beneficial. Some plants are poisonous and others are considered deadly if used for a long time.

Be aware however that some herbs and plants can be poisonous or are for external use only make sure you study up on an herb before using it. A good book to start with is LLewellyn's herbal almanac (2007 is great)
I could help more specifically of course if I knew what benefits you were looking for this is all basic! Good luck on being more natural, healthy and in the end happy!

does anyone know if breast enhancement pills really work?

ponypuffgi

If you do could you please tell me which ones are the safest and your results.

Answer
Many different internet companies advertise breast enhancement pills. Most of them claim that by taking their ânaturalâ product you can increase your breast size by one to two inches (2 to 3 cup sizes) in just 90 days.

These herbal tablets contain chemicals called phyto-oestrogens. The companies selling these products claim that these chemicals will stimulate the oestrogen receptors in your breast tissue and permanently enlarge your breast size. Phyto-oestrogens are chemicals found in plant foods (phyto means âplantâ). They are similar in structure to the female sex hormone oestrogen.

The tablets are supposed to work by âtrickingâ your breasts into believing that you are pregnant. This means that the pills stimulate the production of oestrogen in your body in the same way that oestrogen is produced during pregnancy. The idea is that your breasts will enlarge in the same way as they would if you were pregnant. But the manufacturers say that you wonât produce milk and unlike that of pregnancy, the enlargement is supposed to be 85 to 90% permanent.

What natural herbs do breast enhancement pills contain?
Herbal medicine is the use of plants or mixtures of plant extracts in the treatment or prevention of disease. This includes all parts of the plant, the leaves, stalks and roots. Each part can differ in strength and effects. You need to be careful with herbal medicines, as with any medicine. Just because a product is called ânaturalâ or âherbalâ, doesnât necessarily mean that it is always safe to use.

Many modern drugs were originally made from plants. The effect they have depends on the chemicals in the plant, how they work in the body and on how the product is made by the manufacturer.

The combination of herbs in breast enhancement pills seems to vary depending on the company selling them.

Examples include all or a combination of the following

Fenugreek Extract
Saw Palmetto
Wild Yam Extract
Siberian Ginseng Root
Avenal Satliva
Chinese Red Ginseng Root
Astragalus Root
Cayenne Fruit
Echinacea Whole Plant
Fo Ti Root
Golden Seal Root
Guarana Seed
Panax Ginseng Root and Extract
Scientific studies looking into herbal products are increasing and many of the herbs listed above have been individually researched. But we donât know of any published clinical trials that have studied a combination of all these herbs. How herbs may interact with each other and with any existing medication that you may be taking, can be a cause for concern. We just donât know enough about this yet.

Herbs and dietary supplements are starting to be regulated in the UK. But at the moment it is still difficult to find out if the dose and potency of ingredients in herbal remedies are within safe and acceptable limits. You can find out more about the safety of herbal medicines in our section on complementary and alternative therapies. And the following link will take you to an American cancer website with information on most of the individual herbs in the above list.

What research has been done into breast enhancement pills?
The Department of Health Care Sciences at George Washington University School of Medicine, in America have done some research into this. They published a paper in 2003 called "Bust enhancing herbal products".

They say that several herbs in breast enhancement tablets do actively work on your hormones. But they donât recommend using them because we canât be certain that they are safe or that they work as breast enhancers.

The effect of phyto-oestrogens on breast tissue isnât really clear. Some early research suggested that women with diets high in phyto-oestrogens have a lower risk of breast cancer. A joint study, reported in July 2002 by Cancer Research UK, the National Cancer Institute of the USA and the National University of Singapore, found that women with a soya-rich diet had breast tissue that was less dense than women with low soya diets. Higher density of breast tissue has been linked to a higher risk of breast cancer. This is the first study to directly link eating soya with an effect on breast tissue. Another recent study found breast cancer risk was lower in women who consumed miso regularly. Miso is made of steamed soya beans, then mixed with salt and other fermenting agents.

Not all studies into breast cancer risk have found that phyto-oestrogens have any effect, so we can't be completely sure about this yet. Some researchers are concerned that these foods may stimulate the growth of human breast cancer cells.

You may want to look at information about risk factors for breast cancer, including hormones.

My advice
Because we donât know enough about the long term safety and effectiveness of breast enhancement pills we donât recommend that you use them. Many of the companies who promote their use say that for women with small breasts, enlarging them will

Boost your confidence
Improve your self esteem
Give you a fuller life!
Regain the attention you deserve
Help you fill out swimsuits and bras
Put you in control of your body
Make you the envy of all eyes!
These are all direct quotes from websites selling breast enhancement products.

We find this information very disturbing and misleading. Many women with small breasts have very fulfilling lives and donât suffer low self esteem! Although we live in a society that seems to suggest that, âbigger breasts are betterâ, it isnât necessarily true. Before you decide to take these pills we would strongly advise you to read all the information here. If you are still not sure then seeing your GP for advice may help.

Pregnancy Ramen
[Reset]
Keys : Instant Noodles Maggi Student Budget Easy Pasta
Ingredients :

1pktramen (I like Top Ramen Sesame Flavor)
1xegg
1/2cupthinly sliced carrots

Method :

* 1/2 Cup chopped scallions (green onions)
* 1 tsp crushed sesame seed-nori mix (available in Japanese markets)
* This is the only way I could justify eating ramen noodles while pregnant. At least I could tell myself I was getting protein and veggies to counter the sodium and MSG. Mix up the egg as if you were going to scramble it and throw it in the pot when you put the ramen on to boil. Throw in the carrots at the same time. Meanwhile, put the ramen powder, nori mix, and scallions in the bottom of a bowl. Drain most of the water from the ramen and pour the noodles, egg, and carrots into a bowl. Mix and eat, salting every few forkfuls. Try not to think about what the MSG is doing to your unborn child.
* Note: This works well with Sesame, Chicken, and Oriental flavors, but tastes pretty bad with Beef, Spicy Beef, and Cajun Chicken. Not sure about Shrimp or Pork.

How early in the pregnancy do you start getting hungry?

Val

I'm only a couple of weeks at most, but I am starving. It's ridiculous!!! I am hungry all the time for very specific foods/things I don't ordinarily eat (Shrimp, for example) in high quantities. At most I'm five weeks. I actually took the pregnancy test because I was so hungry all the time. Is this normal?

Answer
I think I started getting really hungry at 5-6 weeks but didn't get any cravings for a lot longer (20+ weeks), I was a bottomless pit! It started to return to normal around 12 weeks thankfully!

Healthy foods during pregnancy to calm nausea?

jamistone2

Could anyone recommend any healthy foods/ drinks during pregnancy? Right now I am about 6 weeks and really feeling sick so any foods that would calm down the nausea would be really helpful too ... also, how long does the nausea usually lasts?? I've been experiencing headaches also, but I don't really want to take any medication right now..... any opinions?

Answer
What I found that worked for nausea for me was eating a high protein snack when it came on. Almonds and some other types of nuts worked best. I also had to eat a high protein breakfast like eggs to get rid of it in the morning. If that didn't work, I kept some gingerale on hand for when it got really bad and that settled my stomach a bit. It's a good idea to "keep the tank full" and not get too hungry, that will cause a lot of nausea, so that's where the high protein snacks come in handy. They fill you up pretty quickly. The nausea lasted most of the first trimester for me, went completely away in the second, and has come back again now that I am in the third (but not quite as bad).

As far as headaches, I feel your pain. I've had pretty severe headaches throughout the pregnancy. A lot of them have been hormone related and nothing makes them any better. But sometimes I will get one when my blood sugar gets too low or if I haven't had enough fluids. So be sure to drink lots of water. :) Hope you feel better!!

I am 8 weeks pregnant with our 1st, and want to know what foods to avoid during pregnancy.?

I want to know what foods are good and what foods are bad during first trimester pregnancy. I am also experiencing morning sickness. Are there any remedies for morning sickness?
You all have provided me with excellent answers. Thanks for the help!

Answer
Stay away from raw food like sushi, caffeine isnt very good for baby it can cause him/her to develop diabetes. Dont drink coffee or of course alcohol. Try eating greens like peas and drink lots of milk and water. Do not eat raw eggs or any cake or cookie batter that has egg in it and hasnt been cooked. Check out this website. It has some good tips and information on it. Its what i used when i had my first baby. You can also try gettin up in the middle of the night and grabbing a bowl of cereal which might help your morning sickness. Ask your doctor about the drug called Zofran. It helped my nausea a great deal. Congradualtions on the new addition to your family! And good luck.

P.S. when you go into labor get an epidural. itll save your life. lol

During pregnancy is it normal to have both constipation and diarrhea?

I am 28 weeks pregnant and lately I have noticed that I am either constipated or I have very upset stomach with diarrhea. During my first and most of my second trimester I was VERY constipated. I haven't changed anything (types of food, vitamins...) and now its either I can't go at all or I am on the toilet 3 times a day. Has anyone else experienced this? How did you become more regular?
P.S. This is a very good, uncomplicated pregnancy...

Answer
Totally normal! Ask your doctor what you can take to help with the constipation because it will get worse and can be painful. Happened to me and my doctor told me what medicine to take (I can't remember what it was) The constipation can last up until your about ready to go into labor, so I would ask for some relief:)

Answer
Soft cheeses because of the risk of listeriosis (mozzarella, feta, bleu cheese, brie, etc.) unless they are heated to melting; deli meats unless heated until steaming (for the same reason as the cheeses); liver/pate because it is too high in Vitamin A; bacon and hot dogs because they are too high in nitrates; some fish (like shark and swordfish) because they are too high in mercury; raw or undercooked meats and raw or undercooked eggs because of multiple types of bacteria (raw eggs pop up in strange places, like eggnog, so check the ingredient lists); coffee/soda/caffeinated teas because of the caffeine (one cup a day is usually okay); anything made with unpasteurized milk (anything made with Grade A milk IS pasteurized, by the way); unwashed vegetables or fruits; uncooked foods like sushi or smoked meats; alcohol; herbs (small amounts used in cooking are OK); and some say peanuts because of the allergy risk, but that's still controversial.

I am 18 years old and this is my first pregnancy. I took two hpts and both came back positive, now I am going to schedule an appointment to get bloodwork done. But I was just wondering what type of stuff I should avoid during pregnancy. Any information would be most appreciated. =]

Answer
- soft and blue-veined cheese, such as Camembert, Brie and Stilton. (There is no risk of listeria associated with hard cheese such as cheddar, cottage cheese or processed cheese),

- pâté (any type, including vegetable),

- certain prepared salads such as potato salad and coleslaw, and
ready-prepared meals or re-heated food, unless they are piping hot all the way through.

- Avoid food containing raw or partially cooked eggs, such as homemade mayonnaise, and some mousses and sauces. You should only eat eggs if they are cooked until both the white and the yolk are solid.

- Avoid unpasteurised dairy products.

- Cook all meat and poultry thoroughly, and take particular care with products made from minced meat, such as sausages and burgers.

- Make sure these are cooked until they are piping hot all the way through and no pink meat is left.

- Take particular care with meat at barbeques, parties and buffets.
- Bacteria breed quickly on food that is left uncovered in a warm environment.

- Make sure that raw meat does not come into contact with other food (for example in the fridge), particularly food that is already cooked or that will be eaten raw.

- Always wash your hands after handling raw meat.

- unwashed raw fruit and vegetables,

- raw or undercooked meat, and

- unpasteurised goats' milk or goats' cheese.

Waterskiing, horseriding, snowboarding, downhill skiing or surfing may be your favourite sports but put them all on hold while you're pregnant. For now, you should avoid any activity that puts you at risk of falling. That includes activities like tennis or cycling if you're not used to them, as your sense of balance may be altered. Vigorous jogging that puts pressure on your joints or back should also be avoided. Scuba diving and other 'pressurised' sports are out since air bubbles can form in your blood stream as you surface. These bubbles are very dangerous for both you and your growing baby. Cross waterslides and most amusement park rides are off your list too, as a forceful landing or sudden acceleration or deceleration could harm your baby. Some studies show that raising your temperature during early pregnancy can increase the risk of birth defects so you should avoid saunas and Jacuzzis, as well.

Also avoid exercising in the heat and if you were a couch potato before you got pregnant, don't suddenly take up strenuous exercise now. After week 16, avoid exercise that involves lying flat on your back with raised legs, such as sit-ups, as the weight of your uterus may press on major blood vessels.

What kind of tea is safe during pregnancy?

KissMyCowb

I've seen many lists of teas that are NOT safe during pregnancy. Does anyone know which ones are safe? I'm not terribly concerned about caffeine. I'll ask by Dr next time I see her, but I'm look for a short list for the meantime.

Answer
People often greatly exaggerate the degree to which tea is unsafe during pregnancy. The main issue with tea (pure tea, or true tea, like your regular black breakfast tea, green tea, etc.) is the caffeine. But the caffeine levels in tea are low, and the body is pretty resilient.

There's an article on a site that I run that explores this in detail, and cites several authoritative medical bodies and their recommendations:

http://ratetea.com/topic/tea-and-pregnancy/19/

Basically though, 3 cups of tea a day are TOTALLY within safe levels for caffeine for pregnant women. And unless it's really strong tea, 5 cups of tea might still be within those levels.

Tea is not like smoking or heavy alcohol use. Those things will harm your baby and increase the risk of all sorts of complications if you do them. There is some evidence that very heavy caffeine use may increase the risk of miscarriage by a very slight amount...but that's all. There's no evidence that moderate caffeine use (3 cups of tea or less) can cause any harm.

---

About herbs...this really depends on the concentration too. If you're drinking a single cup of an herbal tea for beverage use, it's really like a food, not a medicine...don't worry about it. I would avoid strong medicinal teas though, and I'd avoid large volumes of one type of tea. Example: chamomile tea can act as a blood thinner when you have a lot of it, so I wouldn't drink it every day or drink many cups of it. But for a single cup of one thing, or blends containing many herbs in small amounts, that's fine.

Stop worrying! Just practice moderation.

Why do recipes say remove the bay leaf. Is it poison?

Answer
According to Wikipedia Bay leaves have been said to be poisonous, but this has never been proven.

Some types of laurel plants are poisonous. It is important to use only Bay Laurel. There is some evidence to suggest that Bay leaf is a uterine stimulant so it should be avoided during pregnancy.

Bay leaf works great to soothe the stomach and relieve flatulence. A tea made from the leaves soothes minor stomach upsets. The oil from the leaves is said to relieve the aches and pains of rheumatism, sprains, bruises, and skin rashes. When pulped, Bay leaves can be applied as an astringent to burns and bruises. Studies have shown Bay to have mildly narcotic and sedative effects on mice, therefore it can be tried in a tea before bed for better sleep, or after a stressful day.

How much does it cost to get a good maternity insurance?

Iker Casil

I am interested in getting a maternity insurance to avoid paying huge amounts of money for the expenses involved in a pregnancy (9 months + delivery). Where can I get that? How much does it cost? What does it cover? Does it matter if the pregnancy is already in progress, in other words, is it harder to get insurance? is it more expensive? (BTW, I am foreign, and I live in Texas)

Answer
Hi! I am not here to judge you and tell you to go back to your own country...as many will say. I am not in your shoes so I will only answer the question.

Normally I would say that if you are unable to pay for prenatal care or insurance to call your local Department of Social Services and go in for an interview and to sign up for benefits. Pregnant women, without income and unmarried (or even married) are entitled to health benefits, WIC, and possible food stamps. The insurance will pay for all of the doctor's visits, sonograms, prenatal vitamins, any other medications and the delivery.

That being said, if you do not have a green card, or a social security number, I don't know how that works...but I KNOW you cannot be denied medical care. ( I actually called this morning to my local SS department here in MD...haven't gotten a call back yet but I will EDIT once I do. My husband is in the Coast Guard and I will also ask him once I get a hold of him)

If you do not qualify for medical assistance, you can/ go to any prenatal clinic in your area. They charge on a Sliding Scale - which is a % of what you can afford. Parkland Memorial Hospital there in Texas has MANY clinics also!! It is important for you (and your baby) to get prenatal care. Regardless of how well you take care of yourself and even if you take OTC, over the counter, prenatal vitamins, only a DR can predict if something is going wrong by the tests they preform. Many things can be prevented if caught early!

BEST of luck to you!!

If you can afford private insurance, I suggest you Google

EDIT: I called the local SS Depth here in my area and they informed me That HERE, if applied for, only the birth and hospital stay would be covered. It would not cover prenatal care. It varies from state to state and from county to county.
Call your local SS and ask;)
