I need recipes for pregnancy.?

KC

I'm 11 weeks pregnant and this is my second pregnancy. My first pregnancy I was 40+ pounds lighter, which I was still overweight to begin with, but it was hard for me to eat healthy since all healthy food made me nauseous and 97% of the time I threw it up. So the only things I could eat were Subway sandwiches, corndogs, hotdogs, some vegetables, and McDonalds chicken sandwiches. Surprisingly my son came out at a healthy weight of 7lbs 7oz.

Now with this pregnancy, all meat is making me sick. I don't want to look at it, smell it, or cook it because I always have to gag. When I went to visit my OBGYN she said since I"m overweight that me gaining little to no weight with this pregnancy is perfectly normal and that the baby looks and sounds healthy. She said if I do gain weight that she doesn't want me to gain more than 10lbs for the whole pregnancy. As of right now, I am able to eat salads, fruit, vegetables, cereal, oatmeal, and I have a really bad craving for chocolate which I'm not trying to indulge in since chocolate contains caffeine.

Are there any websites or forums with really great recipes to help give the baby nutrients without gaining so much weight? Also, if anyone else has had to do this same restriction with weight gain, how did you handle it and what did you do to keep the weight gain to as little as possible?

Answer
Not knowing all of your background and health, this advice is limited and from one perspective of nutrition. I don't think it's healthy to only gain 10lbs of weight during pregnancy, unless it's a net gain because you're exercising and losing fat during the time of gaining baby. The baby itself accounts for 7-8lb, plus the placenta, extra blood volume. That is over 10lbs. I wouldn't fret too much. I am/was overweight as well, and instead of worrying about what I gained, my focus big time is on the nutrient quality of the food I'm eating, for the sake of growing a baby. I am liberal on fat (especially saturated fat), eggs, cheese, protein and healthy dairy and butter. I gained almost 50 with my first, lost all but 10, and then gained about 30 with my second, and lost all but 6-7 of that.

Granted, I don't agree with a lot of mainstream information about what to eat and what not to eat - my referrals for eating come from traditional, age-old sources of nutrient dense food (check out the Weston Price Foundation). So with adding the above foods, and also limiting sugar intake, I have had two very healthy children, very healthy pregnancies and births, and have conceived the first month we tried with three kids (I'm now 5w with our 3rd child and plan to eat the same way - only change is not increasing food intake my first trimester since no weight gain really needs to occur then). I also avoided nausea during my second pregnancy and hope to this one as well. Can't get away from heartburn though. :-(

I like Dr. Sear's pregnancy book even though I don't agree with his parenting philosophy. I find it less worry-inducing compared to the What To Expect series.

Anyway, hope that helps. To sum, if I could list the nutrients I have some to feel are most important for a babe in the womb, it would be:

- saturated fat (meat, eggs, full fat dairy)
- cholesterol (for baby's brain...eggs)
- protein (for mama's health)
- organ meats (don't care for....so I take a dehydrated organ blend capsule from Dr. Ron's, called Organ Delight (available online))
- folate (body doesn't really use folic acid...find folate on amazon)
- vitamin C for a strong amniotic sac
- good quality probiotics, either in the form of food or a capsule

what was your favorite food or treat during pregnancy? any good recipes?

anything good to eat if you have nausea?

Answer
I loved anything with vinegar on it. I found myself eating salads at 9am.

During my morning sickness days, I mainly craved citrus and watermelon. I found if I listened to my cravings and ate what appealed to me I wouldn't be as sick. Saltine crackers, ginger altoids and real ginger ale (the kind that actually contains ginger) helped my nausea. As well as protein shakes, I use to make a homemade shake with berries, yogurt and a little protein powder.
