Feeding my 2 year old?

M

My 2 year old is in that time when he just refuses to eat. He says no to most of the food I prepare for him. I would like to know if there are any good websites with ideas on how to prepare food for my baby?
New and healthy ideas?

Answer
The ages between one year of age and three years of age, is a time of great learning and a time when "taste training" is happening - if he is going to have a love of healthy foods, that starts now, if he will have a love of junk food, fatty food, that starts now.

Your child should be eating lots of vegetables such as broccoli & cauliflower (maybe in a cheese sauce), green beans, mashed potatoes, cubed cooked carrots, sweet potatoes, buttered beets, green peas.

For fruits he can eat thinly sliced apple (maybe with cubes of cheddar cheese), canned or fresh tangerines, bananas, grapes cut in half, ripe pears, peaches (cooked in oatmeal for breakfast), cooked apples in apple sauce.

Also he can eat yogurt (fruit or plain), cottage cheese, cream cheese on toast.

Meats - ground beef cooked and covered with mashed potatoes with grated cheese on top (broil until bubbling), white fish such as cod or haddock cooked in milk and served with mashed potatoes, chicken breasts cooked with brown rice or potatoes.

Make faces out of fruits on plates - slices of apples for ears, tangerine segments for eyes, slices of cucumber for noses, half cherries in a row for a mouth, grated carrot for hair, you can make a bow-tie out of cheese - what kid can resist that!

This is the time to introduce new and exciting foods to kids - parents shouldn't miss the boat on this one!

If you do, you have kids whose culinary experience is just mac & cheese, chicken nuggets and french fries!

Also, forget the "picky eater" label - they can only eat what you buy for them, they can't go to the store by themselves yet, so our job is to teach and encourage them to try new and nourishing foods.

Dump the processed food, serve him wholesome, healthy foods. When served healthy flavourful foods, children will not starve themselves to death - if they are used to processed foods such as maccaroni and cheese, be prepared for a little complaining, but serve them what is for dinner, parents should show kids that THEY enjoy those foods, and they WILL eat what is good for them if parents have removed all the other food from their table.

If he is "off" food for a meal or two, offer him a cup of milk and let him go and play - when he is hungry make sure you offer him something wholesome and healthy, not just crackers and cookies.

Safe to exclusively breastfeed for one year without any other baby foods?

Need a Mir

My friend told me that she exclusively breastfed her child for one whole year and never bothered with giving her any other type of baby food. Her daughter is a healthy little girl. I want to know if it is completely safe for me to do so? I want to know if anyone else has tried this? Are there any studies out there that have moms breastfeed exclusively for one year without introducing any other types of foods?

Answer
Oh yes, you can absolutely breastfeed for a year without any other baby food! I breastfed my daughter up until she was a year. I started weaning her at about 11 1/2 months and that is when I just introduced her to her sippy cup and food! We had no problems and she is a healthy child. She is now 19 months and she has a great immune system. She rarely ever gets sick and she's never had ear infections. Breastfeeding babies actually eat smaller portions than they would formula because breast milk meets the child's nutritional needs better than formula. I've also included a great site that has pros and cons of both breastfeeding and bottle feeding! Good luck, I hope it helps! :)
